How Should I  Dress for My Shoot?

9/5/2013

Your photographer is selected (JF Studioz, of course) ...
The location and time is set.. Now what will you wear?
This is often the most difficult decision to make amidst the excitement of preparing for a photo shoot.
Below are some simple guidelines based on my experience behind the camera lens

Wear something thats You!

Picture
Regardless of the type of shoot, wear something that is you. The more comfortable and confident you are in your outfit, the more fun and natural the pictures will be.
If you are self conscious about what you are wearing or uncomfortable it will translate through the lens and to your photos.

Generally, if you are uncomfortable with your arms out or self conscious about your legs, then wear short sleeves instead of no sleeves or wear a longer maxi style dress to cover your legs. Its the minor details that will make a world of difference.

This way instead of spending every second between shots trying to adjust your shirt, pull down a skirt, or cover the scar you may not like.. the photographer can also catch some cute candid shots of you enjoying the shoot.

Use Patterns & Shiny Fabrics Sparingly

Use patterns sparingly, as it takes the focus away from you in the photos.
Often times it will clash with different backgrounds and limit the places the photographer can capture a dashing photograph. If you do use patterns to coordinate in group photos, the best way to go is solid bold stripes or patterns with large portions of the same color.
Also beware of wearing shiny fabrics with glitter, sequin, etc.
You can still spice up your outfit by wearing complimentary solid colors or adding some snazz to your outfit with layers or accessories. Which brings me to my next point...

Don't be Afraid to Layer!

Picture
Layers add variety to the photos and help with your comfort with poses. This may be difficult to do in Texas summer heat. However, throw a sleeveless vest or a nice blazer with your outfit. Perhaps a contrasting bracelet, scarf,or undershirt will do the trick as well.

It's not necessary to be Matchy-Matchy

Picture
With family shots especially, clients tend to want to wear the exact same thing. Its ok if that is the look you are going for. However, it usually is difficult to get everyone to cooperate and it gives the picture more variety when you wear complimentary outfits instead of the exact same thing. Pick one or two colors everyone will wear and coordinate. Some people may wear the color in their shirt or bottoms. Some will coordinate with their scarf and jewelry. This way everyone looks together but not the same.

It is OK to do a Mini Dress-Rehearsal before the shoot

Try on your outfit before the shoot. We promise no one will make fun of you.
This way you can ensure those pants still fit how you thought when you purchased them a month ago. You may also see surprise tears, holes, or stains that you hadn't noticed before.
Sometimes you may have tried on the different articles of clothing at different time but never together.  This will let you know everything flows or gives you time to adjust something if needed.

JF Studioz wants to make sure you look your best in your photos and feel your best while taking them.
